Should You Avoid Potty Training Diapers?
There is still a debate as to whether parents should use potty training diapers when potty training their child. These may be diapers that you used before only in a larger size or with more absorbency. The major consensus is that diapers should be switched to training pants when the potty training process begins. One reason for this is that some little ones don't mind sitting in a wet or dirty diaper as much as they mind wet or dirty training pants, which are less absorbent. Your child may be reluctant at first, but training pants come in cute designs and are pulled on just like underwear.
Along with the training pants, there are other child potty training aids you may need. You may want to try a potty training DVD, potty training doll or potty training guide written by an expert in the pediatrics field. Also it is important to keep the lines of communication open with your child's pediatrician. They can offer great insight into the world of potty training, as they have seen many children go through it and may also have kids of their own. The first thing they will tell you is not to stress over the issue.
When you are stressed because your child is not potty training when you want him or her to, the tension can have a negative effect on your child. They may also become stressed, and their brains might associate this feeling with potty training. Experts say that although some kids potty train as early as 18 months, others wait until they are around 3 years old or even older to master the potty. It all depends on the individual child and how they feel about the subject. Some are eager to learn while others are not. Encourage your child, show them what to do, take them to the potty every few hours, but don't force them to sit until they go if they resist.
As a general rule, potty training diapers should be avoided because they may lead to regression, i.e. your child using the diapers rather than the potty. If you are not comfortable enough to put your child in regular underwear, go the training pants route. This will encourage them to use the potty and get them used to the feeling of pull-on underwear. Also, you may want to let your child pick out their own potty chair, as this may entice them to actually use it.
