Potty Training Tips For Parents

When parents start to think about potty training their child, the prospect can be both daunting and exciting at the same time. They imagine no more wet or soiled diapers to change. What many parents don't tend to think about is that for most, potty training is no picnic. Some kids are easy to potty train...others, not so much! Every child is different, so there is no set in stone potty training program. What works for some may not work for others. Here are some potty training tips that can help most parents and children to get through this stage.

Number One: Educate Yourself on Potty Training

This might mean picking up a potty training guide or a potty training DVD. Reading books on the subject can also be helpful. Also, consider the child you are planning to potty train. Which method do you think would work best for him or her? There are all kinds, from underwear potty training, potty training with training pants and even allowing children to run around unclothed. These are by far not the only methods of potty training, so do your research before taking the first advice you get on how to potty train your child.

Number Two: Make Sure Your Child is Ready

One of the most important potty training tips in any potty training how to guide, is to wait until your child is ready to be trained. The rough guidelines are between 18 and 36 months of age. However, this does not mean that your child is abnormal if they are ready earlier or later than this. Signs of readiness include wanting to wear underwear, asking to use the potty, staying dry longer than two hours, and responding positively when you bring up the subject of using the potty. Whatever you do, never force a child who isn't ready to potty train to do so, as this will cause grief for the both of you.

Number Three: Let Your Child Be an Active Part of the Process

When potty training, it can be very helpful to let your child assert his or her independence. This means let them choose the potty chair they want, the training pants or underwear they want. This will make them more likely to use the items since they chose them. There are also potty training DVD titles made especially for kids, and if your child enjoys television they may respond well to the right fun yet educational DVD.

These potty training tips are only a few of the many you will find when researching this subject. A final thing for parents to keep in mind is not to get stressed over it, your child will pick up on your stress and it will be magnified. Relax and let your child go through the potty training process when he or she is physically, mentally and emotionally ready.
